WELLINGTON’S BIG INCREASE PETROL DUTY WELL UP BEER EXCISE ALSO MORE The Customs revenue collected at Wellington last year totalled well over £3,000,000 and showed an increase-of £467,347 compared with that for 1928. The revenue for December was £267,659 compared with £229,062 for December, 1928. Each quarter of 1929 showed an increase of well over £lOO,OOO in the net Customs revenue collected compared with the corresponding periods of last year, as is shown in the following table: —

It will be seen that the second quarter of the year, when there Is a seasonal falling-off in imports, had a Customs revenue of nearly £700,000, or £132,426 more than for the corresponding quarter of 1928. The revenue for the third quarter was by far the heaviest for some years, if it is not a “record.” ' Motor-Spirit and Tire Taxes. Collections of duty on motor spirit last month were £27,149, as against £23,210 for December, 1928; and of tire tax £4545, as against £3920. Motor spirit duty last year totalled £378,915, an Increase of £48,079 compared with 1928. The figures for the four quarters of last year and of 1928 are shown in the following comparative table:—
