SAILORS’ FRIEND SOCIETY
The Christmas season has been a bright and happy one for the men visiting the Sailors’ Friend Society. On Sunday the Missioncr, Mr. J. Moore, preached morning and evening. Mrs. E. Morrisby was instrumentalist in the morning, and in the evening Mr. P. Archer, in the absence of Mrs. H. G. Good. ■ On Christmas Eve there was seasonable hospitality in the gaily decorated institute. On Christmas Day Mr. Mooro preached on “What Docs Christmas Mean?” at 11. At 4 p.m. the party of men entered into the games under the leadership of the Missioner, who was splendidly assisted by his helpers. At 5.30 high tea was Served. Then followed the “bit o’ baccy” and yarns so dear to tho heart of a sailor. Mrs. Mdore, assisted by Mesdames Dunn and Morrisby, did the honours of the tables. After tea games continued with unabated interest till 10.30 p.m. Tho interval for Christmas supper was a time when the men expressed their keen appreciation of the Wellingtonlans’ hospitality. The prize winners in the day’s events were Mrs. E. Morrisby and Messrs. Dudley, Silver, Ohere, Morrisby, Finnigan, Keating. Gallagher, Lightfoot, Mullin. The day closed with prayer, “God Save tlie King” and “Auld Lang Syne,” and cheers for all who had made the day so bright. . On Boxing Day a merry party journeyed to Wakefield Park, where a happy time was spent in games. A football match, “Invergorden v. Allcomers, ended in one goal to each. Tho ladies beat the men in the tug-of-war. Lunch and tea were served gipsy fashion by Mrs. J. Moore and her helpers. At dusk cheers were given for those who had lent the park, and helped to make the day so pleasant, and then the party made for the Institute, where games filled the bill till supper time. Then came a round of singing and votes of thanks. Special items on the steel guitar were given by Mr. Lawrence Beavis. The prize-winners -in the day’s events were the Misses R. and S. Colpus and Messrs Vardy, Morrisby, Dudley,. Hitchlngs, Silver, Dutton, Sacker, Oldfield, Martin, Barnes. Gallagher, Frazer, BOmes. Mcßeth, Mullin, Martin, Fogarty,* Hall, Sackey, Guthrie.
