TOTALLY DESTROYED
HOUSE BURNED AT RONA BAY
The seven-roomed residence of Mr. C. A. Marquis, general manager of the Temperance and General Insurance Company, at 29 Oroua Street, Rona Bay, was totally destroyed by fire shortly after four o’clock yesterday afternoon. The fire had a good hold when it was discovered, and all efforts were unavailing to save the house, the contents of which were also destroyed. It was later discovered that a dog had perished in the flames.
The houses on either side of Mr. Marquis’s residence were scorched, but neither was burned. The Eastbourne Fire Brigade’s chemical engine was used to protect the house on the northern side, and volunteers kept a watch over the one on the southern side. There was a strong northerly blowing at the time, and had it not been for a vacant section between the burning house and the one on the south side, the latter, No. 33 (belonging to Mrs. Morris) must have been badly burned. The house on the north side belongs to Miss Mabel Crosby. No one was at home at the time of the outbreak, the cause of which is not known. The insurances were not available last night. _______
