BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.

Mrs. Orange entertained the combined Lyall Bay and Kilbirnie branches of the British and Foreign Bible .Society on Thursday afternoon at the manse. The following oflicers were elected:— Lyall Bay: President, Mrs. Orange (reelected) ; secretary, Mrs. Russell (reflected) : collectors, Mesdamcs L. Anderson, Cull, Henley, Seelife, Stitt, Hiddleston, Pritchard, O'Connor, Misses Seilens and Sister Maud. Kilbirnie: President, Mrs. Buckingham; secretary, Mrs. Buckingam; collectors. Mesdamcs Cull. Webb, Bate, Thwaites, Callam. aud Buckingham. Mrs. Porter spoke upon the growth of the work of the Bible during the last 25 years, stating that the Scriptures had been printed in 240 languages, which was not only a remarkable achievement by the missionaries, but an eloquent testimony to the spread of the .Gospel during those years. Last year 11,399,540 volumes of the Scriptures had been issued. Nuver before had the society distributed to many Books in a single year. The progress throughout was reviewed, it being shown that there was abundant encouragement. The speaker very heartily congratulated all those present upon their fine record for the, year, although Lyall Bay, through rearrangement of the boundary, had surrendered a portion. Kilbirnie, quite a new branch, had also shown an increase on 1928. Mrs. Buckingham, had carried out the duties of both president and secretary as well as doing a considerable amount of collecting. High tributes were paid to the oflicers and collectors for their devotion and tireless energy. Tea was dispensed by Mrs. Orange, to ■whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded. and the singing of the Doxology brought the afternoon to a close.
