Unemployment among shop assistants in Dunedin was stated recently by a trade union official to be worse than it has ever been. More people were coming to his office looking for jobs than had ever previously been the case in his experience, which extended over many years. There were more young women than men looking for positions, though the number of men was greater than usual. There were not many cases in Dunedin, he declared, of married women whose husbands were earning full wages working in shops.
