When, some time ago, Queen Alexandra Band was in great need of new instruments and uniforms, which its financial position precluded it from obtaining, Mr. T. Warnock, of this city, most generously came to the assistance of the band and lent it some hundreds of pounds free of interest. The money has now been paid back, and to show its appreciation of Mr. Warnock’s action the band visited the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Warnock, at Gonville. last evening and gave a “serenade” concert. A very fine programme was given under Captain Buckley, who at supper afterwards said that in ’his 29 years’ residence in Wanganui it was the first time he had had the pleasure of serenading a private citizen. Mr. Gbhns and Mr. Morrison also spoke in appreciation of Mr. Warnock’s action. Mr. and Sirs. Warnock thanked the band for the concert given in their honour. The concluding match of the 1929 miniature rifle shooting season was held last week. The senior champion for the year is K. Lumsden, with an aggregate of 655, and H. Hill was runner-up with 649 points. The junior champion is R. Lumsden, who bids fair to follow the example set by his brother. His total of 647 was very creditable. The runner-up was L. R. Spurdie with an aggregate of 639. In the teams’ match, Ohakea Club beat the Wanganui representatives by 3 points, the scores being: Ohakea 769, Wanganui 766. At the conclusion of the shooting the association, assisted by the Castlecliff Ladies’ Club, entertained those present at supper, and the Mayor of Wanganui (Mr. W. J. Rogers) presented the trophies and championship medals, congratulating Ohakea on winning the championship shield..
