“JOURNEY’S END”

PERFORMANCE ATTENDED BY KING AND QUEEN SALE OF MANUSCRIPT BY AUCTION London, November 14. The King and Queen and the Duke and Duchess of York paid a surprise visit to “Journey’s End” to-night, the King’s fourth attendance at the theatre in the week. His Majesty sent for Mr. Sheriff after the second act and said that he found the play most interesting, and was enjoying it very much. He questioned Mr. Sheriff about the production of the play abroad, particularly as to its treatment by German producers. Mr. Sheriff earlier in the evening was present at the League of Nations dinner at the Guildhall, where the manuscript of “Journey's End”, was sold by auction. Sir James Barrie began the bidding at £5OO. The Lord Mayor, Sir William Waterlow, bid £l2OO, and the MS. was knocked down to Sir Walter Lawrence for £l5OO. Sir Walter Lawrence is a keen supporter of the League, and announced that he had bought the manuscript to be preserved for the nation. The auctioneer disclosed that the entire “Journey’s End" Company had offered a week’s salary for the manuscript. They had to be told that it was not enough.
