SHANNON NOTES

A meeting of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday night. The making of arrangements for the observance of Armistice Day was left in the hands o.f the -Mayor and town clerk. The estimates for the maintenance of the borough main highways were received from the Main Highways Board, the council being allocated £309 for the LevinPalmerston route and £lOO for the I’oxtonShannon route, against £167 and £67 respectively for the previous year. The health ollleer reported that he was in communication wjth the Railway Department with reference to the borough water supply being laid on to the railway station and co’nveriiences. The borough foreman reported the south side of the .Sheehan Street, main highway was completed and the shoulder bn the north side would be finished In a day or two, and metalling was in progress. At a meeting of the Buckley Drainage Board on Tuesday morning it was resolved to accept the Public Works Department’s offer to replace the damaged floodgate nnd leave the other floodgate and the bank from Johnston .Street to the Manawatu River in good order, on condition that when the bank and. floodgate have been put In good order the board undertake sthe future maintenance. With reference to the bank above Johnston Street, tho Department has notified the landowners concerned that it will maintain the banks against erosion due to extra water from the Mangaliao power-house for a period of two years as from July-1, 1929. At the end'of this period the question will be reviewed and possibly the board will then be asked to take over the maintenance of h further section of the bank. The Local Bodies Loans Board forwarded notification of sanction in respect of the loan of £2-160 for flood protection in the board’s district. The clerk-was instructed to obtain the written consent of the ratepayers to the raising of the loan. The Publie Works Department wrote stating that frequent complaints had been received from shipping companies using the port of Roxton bf the number of cabbage trees floating down the river during times of flood. The Department pointed out that every endeavour should bo made by the board,-if cabbage trees were used for protection work, that they be made absolutely secure, and if private- owners were observed using cabbage . trees for -protection work it would bo appreciated if . the Department could be notified accordingly.
