TAIHAPE NOTES
Tailmpo, October 31. The annual meeting of the Otaihape Museum and Philosophical Society was held last evening, there being a good number of members present. The annual report comments that since the inauguration of the museum last year £l4O has been received in public subscriptions, and it points out that visitors are loud in their praise of the collection considering, the size of the town. The election of otbcerS was as follows: —Patron, the Mayor (Mr; J. P. Aldridge); . president, Mr. P. Pedersen; vice-president, Mr. W. H. Maclean; secretary and: treasurer, Mr. H. A. Truj man; committee, Drs. D. L. Sinclair and G. N. MacDiarmed, and Messrs. A. G: Cork, A. James, J. Quirk, IV. Winiata, and A. -R. Fannin. Mr. W. Ross, of the. Bank of New Zealand, and the local secretary of the Caledonian Society, was prior to his departure for Takaka (Golden Bay) to-day presented with a silver shaving miig by fellow members of the staff, the presentation being made by. the manager (Mr. C. L. Dymotk). The death occurred last night of -Mr. W. A. Matthews after a long illness. Deceased, who was 65 years of. age, had seen extensive service in the police force, and before resigning to purchase a booksellers business here-some four years ago, had been located at Taihape as sergeant of police since 1916. He is survived by hiS wife and young daughter. The competition for the Raukura Cup; run under the auspices , of the Taihape Golf Club, lias now been decided, Mrs. A. P. Smith and' L. C. Trigg, with a net score of 67, being, the winners for the 19-9 season. ... Considerable enthusiasm was demonstrated at the annual, meeting of tho Swimming Club last evening, and several trophies for the ensuing season were donated in the room. Now that the baths have been taken over by the Borough Council, the financial burden of tho payment of a caretaker’s wages has been lifted, and the club will confine itself to teaching beginners and organising carnivals. Officers elected were: Patron, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Aldridge) ; president, Mr. C. L. Dytnock: vice-presidents, Messrs. O Neill, Hawk. Quirk, Armstrong, Loader, Robinson, Ongley, Wakeman, and Father Doolagltty; committee, Misses Johnson, Sheldon. ‘and Tristram, and Messrs. Healey, Bond, Mercer, and Fookcs; secretary, Mr. J. Benson; treasurer, Mr. J. McKenzie; club captain. A. Millar: vice-captain, W. Pitt. The official opening will be held on November 7. ...... Mr. J. P. Carr has left the district to reside in Feilding.
