FATAL COLLISION

CRASH IN MASTERTON STREETS WOMAN KILLED, THREE OTHERS INJURED SERVICE CAR AND TOURER Dominion Special Service. Masterton, October 31. One woman was killed and two women and one man were injured when a service car and a light tonring car collided at the corner of Worksop Road and Queen Street shortly before 9 o’clock to-night. The woman killed is Mrs. J. D. Smith, who was seated in the front of the light car beside her husband, who was driving. Those injured are: — Miss Grace Jacobsen (Masterton), who is suffering from head injuries. Miss Lillian Russell (Masterton), also suffering from head injuries, and Mr. J. D. Smith, lately in the employ of Waggs’ Motor Garage, Masterton. Miss Jacobsen was a passenger in the service car which, driven by Mr. A. J. Buckley, was proceeding to a dance in Greytown. Terrible Injuries. The grinding of brakes and the crash immediately after were heard for some distance, and in the space of a few minutes there was a large crowd at the scene of the accident. Mr. Smith was coming down Queen Street towards the town, and it appears that prior to turning in to take the Worksop Road bend he drew well over to the left, and when halfway through his turn to the right the service car collided on the left-hand side of the exact spot where Mrs. Smith was sitting. The door of the car was pushed right off its hinges, and Mrs. Smith sustained terrible injuries to the head, from which she died a few minutes after the crash. The lower half of the windscreen was shattered and flying glass together with a terrific bump caused painful injuries to Miss Russell and to the driver, Smith. The windscreen of the service ear had two large holes smashed through it and Miss Jacobsen was badly cut about the head. Mrs. Smith was taken to a nearby boardinghouse, and the injured people after being attended to by Dr. Cowie were removed to the hospital. Heavy Impact. An examination of the cars showed that the impact must have been a severe one. The lighter car, which was pushed sideways along the road for a short distance, had three tires ripped, while the left-hand side of the car from the driver’s seat to the front wheel was smashed beyond recognition. The left front door was knocked right inside into the driver’s seat and the lower half of the windscreen shattered. The service-car had the left side of its radiator broken and battered and the left front wheel buckled. The lamps were broken and the windscreen smashed in two places. Later, Mrs. Smith’s body was removed to the morgue.
