WELLINGTON CENTRE SATISFACTORY YEAR The annual meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last night, Mr. P. Coira presiding. “In every respect progress has been made, interest in carnivals -has increased, competition has grown keener, and, last but not least, the educational work of the centre has been materially advanced,” stated the annual report. “The finances of the centre are in a very sound position, due not only to a successful New Zealand championship, but to increased attendances at the centre championships, and our proportion of the profits of a carnival held at the Riddiford Baths during championship week. During the season the Wellington Primary School Amateur Swimming Association held its second annual carnival, and something of its success can be imagined when no fewer than 380 competitors took part in the races. Our thanks are due to Mr. H. R. Fisher, our educational officer, for again placing this centre amongst the first few in regard to certificates issued in New Zealand, and we congratulate him on his achievement.” The report added that all carnivals had shown a decided improvement, and the hope was expressed that this would be maintained during the coming season. Still Have to Conserve Funds. The chairman said the Centre’s financial position was fairly strong, but did not indicate that they had money to play with. They would still have to conserve their funds. It was only a matter of every seven years that the Centre had a national championship, whereby they raised funds in addition to their usual income. Last February the Centre conducted the national championships, and judging by the opinions of competitors and visitors, the championships were conducted very successfully. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected: —, President, Mr. I. Dunean; vice-presidents, Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward, Sir Alexander Roberts, Messrs. C. J. B. Norwood, J. P. Maxwell, G. A. Troup, and V. It was reported that the New Zealand Council had agreed to the suggestion of tlie Centre that the Australian swimmers, Greer and Ryan, appear at Wellington on December 21 and January 9. Tlie Centre’s terms were also agreed to.
