CUSTOMS REVENUE

INCREASE AT WELLINGTON CONTINUES SEPTEMBER’S BIG TOTAL Customs revenue collected at Wellington continues to show the increase which has been marked since the beginning of the year. The returns for September were the largest recorded this year and bring the total for the nine months considerably ahead of that for the corresponding period of 1928. The net Customs revenue collected during September was £324,868, or £84,927 more than for September, 1928. The total for the quarte. ended September, £885,416, was £121,628 more than for the corresponding period of 1928, while the total for the nine months of this year shows an Increase of £361,292 over that for the corresponding period of last year. A monthly comparison for the nine months is afforded’ by the following table:—

Motor Spirit and Tire Tax.

Collections of duty on motor spirit last month were £28,917, compared with £22,158 for September, 1928, and for the nine months of this year £292,992, as against £197,420 from March 1 to September 30, 1928 (the only months for which figures are available). The tire tax collected last month was £3748, compared with £3572 in September, 1928, and the total for the. nine months was £44,218, as against £31,997 from March 1 to September 80, 1928 (months for which figures are available). Beer excise collections last month were £3837, compared with £8904. The total for the nine months was £36,331, as against £37,378 for the corresponding period of 1928, a decrease of £1047.
