RIFLE-SHOOTING

PETONE CLUB Tha Petone Rifle Club fired a competition counting for the team series at Trentham on Saturday over ranges of 300 and 600 yards. For the first time for several years the Seddon Range was used for short-range shooting. As the scores indicate, this range lived up to its reputation of being the most difficult to fire over, and the weather conditions certainly did not improve matters. A cold variable wind and a changing light made shooting very difficult, and good scores 'were at a premium,' There was a good attendance considering the indifferent weather; some of the club members were attending the Wairarapa meeting.

At 300 yards F. Kershaw registered a good 46, with T. Warburton next 45, and R. H. Nicholl 44. The wind had everybody guessing. It will take members some time to settle down to the new range.

At 600 yards the light Improved, but the wind was still very ppzsling, The top scorers here were T. Chapman, W. Mclver, J. Hunter and W. H, Ballinger, with 43 each.

-■ The best aggregates were secured by T. Chapman and W. Mclver with 85 each and J, Hunter and T. Warburton with 84 each. The winning team for the team aeries competition was H- Dickson's team with 328 points (T- Chapman 85, W. Mclver 85, 0, Pedersen 85, H. Dickson 78). followed by W. Jackson's team 318, T. Warburton’s team 307, W. H. Ballinger’s team 295, E. Ballinger's team 283, B. H. Nicholl’s team 281. • .. During the afternoon members took the opportunity to wish their deputy-pre-sident (W. Mclver) good luck at the shooting in Australia next month. McIver performed very creditably when in Australia with the New Zealand team in March, when he annexed the shortrange aggregate, A father match in the team series will be fired next Saturday over ranges 300 and 500 yards.

UPPER HUTT CLUB - - ■ ... ' The Upper Hutt Defence Rifle Club fired* a practice'match on Saturday at 300 yards and 600 yards. A changeable southerly breeze, made marksmen make rapid alterations, but were, even then, caught napping as the wind changed. Low scores were I
