MANAWATU COMPETITIONS SOCIETY

OPTIMISTIC ANNUAL REPORT. Palmerston North. August 1. Another successful season is reported in the eighth annual report of the Manawatu Competitions Society. Regarding the festival, the report states: "Unfortunately weather conditions were such that attendances were not so well maintained throughout all sessions as in previous years. Entries showed an increase over last year, easily constituting a record in the history of the society. Following were the entries during the last five years:—l92s, 518; 1926, 726: 1927. 806; 1928, 950; 1929. 1000. The balance-sheet discloses the fact that, with the exception of theatre takings, the -position financially has been well maintained. Theatre takings receded from £394 4s. 3d. hist vear to £336 12s. this year. The statement of receipts and expenditure shows an overdraft of £94 4s. 2d., as against. £B6 9s. 5(1. at the end of last year. Included in the receipts for this year are subscriptions belonging to previous years, and after allowing for this the society shows a loss on its last festival of some £35 Bs. 9(1. The Executive Council has already taken steps In the direction of overtaking this loss by cutting down expenses for next year in certain directions.” In conclusion, the report states that too much stress cannot be laid upon the fact that Palmerston North Is Ideally situated for the holding of these competitions, and that provided those in control of the society’s destinies are prepared to go ahead with energy and vision the future success of the society is assured.
