STATE TRADING
GOVERNMENT’S. ATTITUDE PLEASES EMPLOYERS
"The present Government has declared itself as strongly opposed to the trading activities of local bodies in competition with private enterprise, and Sir Joseph Ward was very definite oa the matter,” states the annual report of the Wellington ' Employers’ Association. “It is to be expected that State and local body trading will be minimised, and, as far as practicable, discouraged in future. This attitude of the Government is very gratifying. The cash order credit system of trading the Government is now inquiring into. The Minister of Industries and Commerce was constituted a Commission, and recently heard evidence on the matter. The Commission’s finding has not yet been announced. It is pleasing to report that the Government has definitely committed itself to a discontinuance of the cash on delivery system. The Dominion user of the system will be nt no serious disadvantage if the system is ibolished, as he can still order goods by post and remit the purchase price direct. Whilst the system lasts, the overseas manufacturer is getting a cheap distributing agency without having to pay taxes, and, at the same time, is protected against bad debts.”
