ACCIDENT TO MIXED TRAIN

TRAFFIC DISORGANISED IN WAIRARAPA Dominion Special Service. Masterton, July 3L Shortly before 11.15 this morning five wagons of a north-bound combined goods and passenger train were derailed near a tunnel between Eketahuna and Mangamahoe. Fortunately no one was injured and the damage done was not of a very serious nature. The derailment, however, caused considerable delay and inconvenience, it being necessary to tranship passengers on both the north and south bound mail trains and the afternoon goods train. The line was clear again at 7.30 tonight. The cause of the mishap is not known. The train was the on» that leaves>Masterton at 9.30 in the morning and it had 35 wagons, one car and one van, being in charge of Guard Russell. A peculiar feature of the accident is that the engine and 16 wagons passed over the spot where the derailment occurred, but the following five wagons were derailed. Altogether the mail trains were delayed for about four hours. The down train for Wellington. leaving Masterton at 6.30 this evening and the north bound train, as well as a further train leaving Masterton at 3 p.m„ were held at Mauriceville. The train due at Masterton from Woodville at 5.30 p.m. did not arrive until 9.30 p.m. The five derailed trucks are still at the side of the line, as well as the goods, mostly lime, that they were carrying. RACEHORSES INVOLVED. Masterton, July 31. Two horse trucks were telescoped. These contained a team of horses, amongst whom was King Midas, owned by Mr. Elgar, of Featherston, en rente to Wanganui. The horses we~e released and it was found that King Midas was not seriously Injured.
