A MAIN HIGHWAY?

TAIHAPE-NAPIER ROAD. A special report is being obtained with a view to ascertaining the suitability of the Taihape-Napier road as an unemployed relief work, according to a statement made by the Minister of Public Works (Hon. E. A. Ransom) in the House of Representatives yesterday. The statement was made in reply to a question by Mr. J. T. Hogan (Rangitikei) as to whether the Minister would consider the question of making the road a main highway, or, if that were not possible at present, if he would place a sura of money on the estimates to maintain and keep the road open. The Minister added that the proposal had been before the Government for sonie time. The amount of through traffic was very small, and the configuration of the road unsuitable, for mainhighway traffic. The Rangitikei County Council had not so far considered the road of sufficient public importance to declare it a main county road, which appeared the obvious way to overcome the financial problem in connection with its maintenance.
