In a “buttons” match played at the Tennis Club courts recently Miss R. Warp and Mr. J. Bradley (scr.) defeated Miss E. Johnston and F. Darvill (scr.), 60—43.

Mr. F. N. Marlow is on a trip to Wellington. Mrs; N. Batchelor is visiting friends at Hastings. At the conclusion of business at a meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade last night occasion was taken by Lieutenant Mortland to make presentations to two retiring members. Captain b. F. Reid, who has started in business at Utiku, was the recipient of a 20-piecc tea set, Foreman R. McClure receiving an oak chiming clock. Many eulogistic references to the work of the retiring bngadesmen were made by fellow members. Mr. and Mrs. L. Haydon and family, Kaka Road, are spending three weeks at the beach at Plimmerton. The finances of the Fire Brigade were the subject of much discussion at a.mceting last night, the captain (S. F. Reid) stating that the running expenses for the year were approximately £l5O, towards which the Borough Council made an annual grant of £5O. Many comparisons with the figures of other brigades were made by the speaker, and finally the delegate to the annual conference at Hokitika (Lieutenant Mortland) was instructed to obtain facts and figures of the working expenses of other brigades in order that a good case may be made when approaching the council for an increased subsidy. ■
