NINTH ANNUAL TOURNEY I OPENED IN FINE WEATHER The ninth annual tournament of the Wellington Croquet - Association was commenced at Lower Hutt yesterday morning, and play proceeded during the day under ideal conditions. The tournament was officially opened by Mr. W. T. Strand (Mayor of Lower Hutt) before a large number of players assembled on the grounds of the Hutt Club.

Mrs. Austin, president of the Wellington Croquet Association, welcomed the visitors and players, calling attention to the fact that entries exceeded those of previous years. If the weather held good, the tournament should be one of the most successful yet held in this district. ■ An apology for absence was received from Hon. Ts M. Wilford, Minister of Justice and Defence and member for the district. The tournament is under the management of Mrs. E. McKenzie, assisted by the Tournament Committee —Mesdames Falder, Johnson, Ramsay, Bock, Gardner, McGirr, Scott, Boocock —who will also act as umpires. Additional umpires appointed by the referee, Mrs. RhodesWilliams, are Mesdames Wickens (Featherston), Feast (Carterton,), Frost (Nelson). Rudkin (Lyall Bay), Griffiths was that played between Mesdames Caldow and Brighting. against Mesdames Walker and Mount. Although plavcd on the Hutt croquet green, which is very sheltered, the players felt the heat verv much. Mrs. Caldow pegged Walker out. and at the same time her own ball, by mistake, rolled on and toncheu the peg.
