EXPLORATION TRIP ENDED
MESSAGE FROM WILKINS FURTHER EFFORTS NEXT SEASON Australian Press Association. London, January 10. Sir Hubert AVilkins wirelesses from Deception Island: ‘Dur present exploration trip is ended. To-morrow we will seek a place hi which to store the machines drill equipinent and will investigate the possibilities of a speedy return to civilisation. This decision was reached following another Hight. AVe flew 250 miles over country recently traversed, seeking a more southern base, accessible by boat, where more favourable conditions are likely. The surface - appeared to be almost solid enough to land upon, yet we knew that if the engine failed we would hurtle through billowy masses on to jagged peaks below. On account of the restricted load we were compelled to return home. AVe determined to postpone further efforts until next season, when we hope to establish a base on the continent itself. AVe will start from thence to fly along the unexplored coast 1800 miles to the Ross Sea barrier.”
