DOMINION BOWLS TOURNEY

PERFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS ON SATURDAY END OF SECTION PLAY IN CHAMPIONSHIP RINKS Saturday saw the erid of section play in the Dominnion Bowling /Rink? Championship. Those rinks who secured six wins out of ■ the eight games played,' qualified for participation in the post section play. None of the rinks secured the maximum of eight wins, but quite a number had only one loss. A notable feature was the fact that only two rinks from Australia qualified, one with seven, wins, and- the other with six. A higher standard of bowls,- generally, was witnessed on Saturday, owing to the absence of the wind that had been such a disturbing factor on the ■ preceding days.

To. the. great joy of all participants 7•> ' the weather, which threatened to be unpleasant up till a late hour on Friday night, turned out to be approaching per- -. fection, on Saturday. NOTES ON THE PLAY Six wins qualified. Twejity-five rinks are left, necessitating one bye in the first and second rounds. The draw will be made to-day. Post-section games for the rinks will commence on the AA’ellington Club’s greens at 9 a.m. on AA’ednesday. Ferkins (Island Bay) had a fairly Solid win against Alderson (A’.B.A.). in the seventh round. The visitors were only permitted to score oh nine heads, five being the final heads of the game (on which they scored 10 points). Ferkins won 33 to 18. Hosking (Carlton) won bis game agairist H. Nash (Palmerston North) by 11 points. Fairway (AA’ellington) was too good for Bartlett (Nelson), on the day, the AVellington skip nearly doubling Nelson’s ricore. ■ A splendid contest was -witnessed at the AVellington green on Saturday morning between Doherty (Kelburn) and AVatson (United). On the twentieth head Doherty -was well ahead, 25—12, but on the succeeding five heads AVatson’s rink piled up twelve points. Doherty just winning by a single point, after a most exciting finish, characterised by some excellent bowling. _ Pilkington (Ilnmiltoii) went down tt> Crawford (Karori) by two points in the seventh round. AA’hen the score was 14— 7 in Pilkington’s favour on the eleventh head, the Hamilton rink found it impbs•ijrile to score for seven successive heads. Pilkington then scored eight on the next four heads, but could only get within two of .Knrori’s total.

Sntlddon (Victoria), who hail only been doing fairly well, had a notable win in the seventh round, when he defeated the redoubtable Brcmner (West End) points after a ding-dong go. . There was a battle .royal between veteran Beynon (Petone) and Ferguson (Balmacewan). On the twenty-third head Beynon was only 23 to Ferguson’s 28, but on the next head Beynon measured in six points. On the last hfead’Ferguson got a single, which made the score tie. On the play-off Beynon scored a single and won the game,. • Easily the most amazing game played in the rinks during tile present tournament was that between Pilkington (Hamilton) and Lambert (Thorndon) bn the Eastbourne green on Friday. It was a game of the most varied fortune imaginable. Pilkington’s men, though up against a rink that was not considered <i strong one, could not get the hang of nie green, though the conditions at Mastbourhe were the very best in Wellington on the day, with the result that Lambert s score was at one stage IS to 1 and then even 20 to 2. Then commenced a battle royal, which meant a hard stern chase for the inch of Hamilton. but with great nerve and steadiness they drew up to 15, to their opponents’ 2J on the twentieth head. Many a skip would have given up the game ns an impossible one to win. Pilkington is not that sort of a bowler. He knows that.anything is possible at bowls, and he fllhyod to win. On twb occasions he laid three and four shots respectively, but. as that would not give him the game he burnt the head .with deadly, accuracy.

Then came his chance, his wood was ly- ■ ing handy, six of them. Lambert dropped short with his first and Pilkington drew another; then Lambert essayed to break up the head with a running shot, but went through the head without touching anything. Then Pilkington drew another beauty and lay eight and the game—23—2l. Speaking of the finish himself, Pilkington said he had never in his bowling life seen such an eight secured, for not one of the bowls in the count was more than eighteen inches from the jack. CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS Having disposed of section play in the rinks, the championsliip pairs will commence this morning. There arc 224 pairs taking part, and they will play on sixteen greens. Each pair will play five games of section play (of 21 heads), three games the first day, and two tomorrow. . The winners and ties in sections will play off on the sudden-death principle. Those bowlers who are to play oil the Upper Hutt green to-day are reminded that a bus will leave the AVellington Public Library at 8.10 a.m. The secretary (Mr. R. AV. Shallcrass) has been successful in filling , the places of the Queenslanders who forfeited their engagements in order to go on tour, so that all games will be played without defaults. . Previous winners of the championship pairs at the D.B.A. tournament have men as follow:— 1914 (Dunedin) —Dunedin Club : J. Johnson, E. Harraway (s.). 1915 (Auckland) —Green Island Club: G. A. BOWLERS’ OUTING TRENTHAM RACECOURSE ADMIRED One of the biggest bowlers’ functions ever held in New Zealand took the foi-m of a motor drive to the Trentham racecourse yesterday afternoon. Bowlers arid their wives and families attended to the ‘ number of about 500, and were transjorted to the.coiirse in seven large motor mses and about fifty or sixty private cars, which left the Post Office square in proeessionhl fbrin at 2 p.iri. After a pleasant run of under the hour the cars reached the racecourse, and. the glory of the extensive lawns and flower beds, looking their very best, nt Oiice criught the eye of the visitors, and impelled, the admiration of all beholders. The Australian bowlers were enthusiastic in their appreciation of the extensive and well laid-out grounds,, the massiveness and unique design of the grandstands, arid the glory of the background Of riiouhtairis, which arfe still looking fresh and green. One vociferous visitor was so carried away by the facilities afforded that he cried the odds on the Championship ' Ririks, but investors were shy when he 1 was fold that the bookmaker was ah : illegal person; ' The visitors liiade a thorough inspection of the grounds arid grandstands, and were convinced that there was nothing superior to it in Australia. After a delectable afternoon tea, serted in the course tea-house, the big party returned to town, having thoroughly enjoyed the outing. Rain fell during the journey. The outing was provided by the Dominion Association, which was represented by the president (Mr. S. M. Stone); the secretary (Mr. R. AV. Shall- j crass), and most of the members of the j council. |

A PICTURESQUE ENTRANCE The floral design marked out in the garden plots which flank the entrance to the AA’ellington Club's green has been comirierited upon most favourably by all visitors to the green last week. This.was the personal work of the vice-president. M" E. J. Hill, who has shown great taste in design and colour scheme in making the entrance more beautiful than it has ever been before. PRESIDENT’S DAY •Wednesday next is President's Day in connection with the. Dominion Association's tournament. Mr. 8. J[. Stone exlends a heiif-ty irivitatlbn to all bowlers and tlibir liidy ffiehtls Id attend lit the AA’ellington Club's green in the after-' nopu.
