PENNY POSTAGE
APPEAL FOR RESTORATION BY BRITISH COMMERCIAL ORGANISATIONS LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, January 10. An appeal to the Government to restore penny postage is made by tire Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of British Industries, and other representative organisations. In a letter to the Prime Minister, the signatories‘ point out that in the last few years the Government has sought to justify the postponement of this reform on the ground that 'the Post Office surpluses were required to meet Exchequer needs. The estimated surplus of the postage services for the current year is over £8,000,000. The signatories submit that the first call upon Post Office revenue should be for the provision of cheap and efficient service, and point out that Canada has recently decided to reintroduce Imperial penny postage, which New Zealand has enjoyed for some time.
