Taihape, January 10.

The final stage of the events for the Eteveneaux Cup (an aggregate trophy), run under the auspices of the Taihape Amateur Cycling Club, will conclude on the Domain this week with a race of one mile. The leaders for the cup at present are C. Siddle (8 points), and G. Carrington (7 points). Mr. J. H. Hall, local manager of the Farmers’ Trading Co., is spending his annual leave in Auckland. Mr. E. H. Lightpoor, of the head office, is relieving him.

A prominent local golf player, Mr. R. McClure, whose marriage took place lately, was met yesterday by fellow-mem-bers of the staff of Messrs. F. Read and Co., and made the recipient of a dinner service, the managing director, Mr. F. Read, making the presentation. Mr. H. L. Butler is confined to his home with an injury to his foot, caused by treading on a rusty nail. At the monthly meeting of the Fire Brigade, a letter from the Borough Council notifying that the fire engine was not to be taken on the recreation ground for practice, caused some little indignation. H, Nicholls is visiting Wellington, Competition cricket was resumed on the Oval this afternoon, when Colts defeated Taihape by 9 runs. Colts made 98 (Burd 24, Dick 16), W. Bradley taking six wickets. Captain S. F. Reid, who has led the local Fire Brigade for the last ten years, resigned last night owing to his going into' business at Utiku. After .many warm tributes had been paid to. him by fellow-brigadesmen, the resignation was formally accepted, with regret. Mrs. J. V. Gresson, Mataroa, is on a holiday in Christchurch. Owing to representations made by various bodies interested, the Railway Department has met the farmers of the district by inaugurating a service of four fat stock trains to Wellington per week.
