LEVIN NOTES

A pleasing incident took, place at the Boys’ Trginipg Farm last week. At a special dinner-hour ope of the boys, J. Roberts, on behalf of his fellows, presented Miss Johnson (matron) with a gold-mounted fountain pen and a goldmounted propelling pencil, both suitably inscribed, in token of her efforts to give the inmates a pleasant time during the festive season, Miss Johnson suitably responded. The intermediate section also made presentations to Mr. and Mrs. Daniels. Mr. Swift, leader of the Methodist men’s Bible class in Levin, has been successful in passing the second section for the B.A. degree.

The head gardener (Mr. Sharpe) at the Central Development Farm reports that the rainfall in Levin for last year was 38.23 inches. No doubt the drought after Christmas, 1927, caused it to be below the average for the last seven years, there being only 157 days wet, whereas there were 1970 hours of bright sunshine.

Fitting tributes to Constable Cosgrave’s services as an honorary member of the local fire brigade, were made at a farewell at the fire station recently, on his departure for Hunterville. There were about 40 present. The Mayor (Mr. T. Hobson) presided, and on behalf of the donors, presented a travelling rug to Mrs. Cosgrave and expressed the regret of the residents at Mr. and Mrs. Cosgrave’s departure, but congratulated Mr. Cosgrave on his promotion. Superintendent Booth also added a word of praise, Constable .Cosgrave acknowledged the gift and kindly sentiments accompanying same.
