INDEPENDENTS IN POLITICS

Sir, —I utterly fail to see how an Independent can sit as a member of any party Cabinet. Why did the Independents not honestly state their political party to the electors? Was it because they were sitting on the fence? Sir Joseph Ward seems to be firmly of the opinion that the electors gave a wholesale vote in his favour, of course, showing their disfavour with the Reform regime, vet honestly stated, Reform have a majority of one over any single party, and it is only by roping in the Independents that Sir Joseph Ward is able to bolster bis party up to enable it to take office. Say, the United Party had only been returned with some half-dozen members. Would the Independents have been satisfied to follow the leadership of the party then ? , ', In conclusion, sir, may I add one word to express my regret that the electors did not see fit to return Sir John Luke again to Parliament, as few men have done for Wellington the good he has done in bygone years.—l am, etc., 0 Wellington, December 17.
