LETTERS TO EDITOR

PARLIAMENTARY PLEDGES

Sir, —I was interested to read in your issue of December 15 that there are 3members in the House of Representatives definitely pledged to secure the full hour of summer time, whilst there are between 20 and 30 not finally committed from whom only eight are required to secure a majority for this measure. I turned to your editorial column to look for some condemnation of those representatives who had pledged themselves in this regard, because I remember having read severe comment about members who had pledged themselves to certain action in regard to licensing legislation. It is well known that a large section or the farming community are strongly opposed to full summer-time legislation. To be consistent, therefore, one naturally expects that you would be criticising the action of the members who have pledged themselves to secure full summer time. The absence of adverse editorial comment seems to imply that the present Parliament might, with your approval, adopt full summer time, in spite of the well-known opposition to it on the part of many of those most closely concerned. It has been stated that the present House is sympathetic to the alliance policy of a two-issue ballot paper, bare majority, and triennial polls. Ought not the House, therefore, to be allowed to pass legislation in this sense, without all the acrid criticism that has hitherto been levelled against members who have indicated their agreement with this legislative programme?-! Wellington, December 1.7.
