WELLINGTON COLLEGE

PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY PRESENTATIONS MADE BY SIR CHARLES STATHAM The annual prize-giving ceremony of Wellington Boys’ College was held yesterday afternoon. Mr. W. 11. P. Barber, chairman of the College Board of Governors, occupied the chair, while among those associated with him on the platform' was Sir Charle Statham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who presented the prizes. The headmaster (Mr. W. A. Armour) stated in his report as follows: — The total enrolment during the year has been 752. It is to be remembered that the opening of the Rongotai Boys’ College at Kilbirnie relieved the congestion from which this school suffered during the past few years. The total enrolment of Boarders was 75, and of Day Boarders 13. The average Roll during the year was 700 and the average attendance 652. The School is able to chronicle a goodly list of successes in the various Departmental and University Examinations held at the end of 1927. O. L. Eaton gained a University Entrance Scholarship, coming first on the list for New Zealand. Repairs effected during the year made our old buidings quite habitable. There were very few occasions on which the weather conditions were so adverse as to make the class rooms really unpleasant to work in. But we are looking forward with much interest to the building scheme about to commence which will replace the present East School and the Gymnasium Block. The immediate building programme will include 20 class rooms. 3 laboratories, common room, offices and a commodious basement, heated on the central plan. In the process of Construction some of the old buildings will be demolished and in about two years’ time the East School dear to the hearts of so many generations of Old Boys, having done splendid service for over 56 years, will be removed. The report stated also that it would be essential in the near future to spend a fairly considerable sum on ground improvements. Prizes were presented as follow:— L—SPECIAL PRIZES.
