SUMMER FLOWERS

NORTHLAND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY FIRST SUMMER SHOW Summer blooms were displayed in all their splendour at the Northland Horticultural Society’s Show, which was opened on Saturday afternoon by the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. A. Wright. The show was the first summer exhibition held by the Northland Society, and those competent to express such an opinion were unanimous in stating that the new venture was a huge success, both in the quality and quantity of the blooms shown. Roses predominated in the display, but there were strong entries in the various other classes. In addition to the horticultural sections there were sections for cooking, art and school classes. The school section attracted good entries, the judge, Mr. D. M. Polson, stating that the work submitted was of a very high order of merit, and that it reflected the greatest credit upon teachers and pupils. There were so many exhibits of almost equal excellence, he said, that the awarding of prizes became a matter of considerable difficulty. In calling upon Mr. Wright to open the show, the president congratulated him on his great victory in the recent election, a remark that brought forth a round of applause. The Minister said he wished to thank his friends of Northland who bad recorded their votes on his behalf. He also wished to congratulate the various exhibitors at the show who had provided so magnificent a display. Results are as follow:— ROSES. Six blooms, any varieties: R. M. Porteous, 1; E. C.
