TAIHAPE NOTES

Talhape, November 24. On Wednesday about 6.45 p.m. a collision occurred in Kuku Street, opposite the premises of the Rangitikei Timber Co. When Mr. H. J. Bowater was backing a light truck from a gateway a touring car, driven by Mr. F. Appleton, of Winiata, and containing five persons, struck the vehicle near the back axle. The fenders and coach work of the touring car'were much ripped, but beyond a few bruises owing to the impact, the occupants were unhurt. The lorry was undamaged. At a meeting of the Utiku Sports Club this week, it was decided to affiliate with the N.Z.A.A.A. to enable club members to compete at outside meetings. In addition to last year’s programme, extra events will include a tug-o’-war, golf putting competition, and a pillow fight. Mr. J. Bryce (Kiwitea) has been appointed judge in the horse competitions section. On Tuesday last a meat van, the property of Timbs, Ltd., and driven by Mr. E. Olsen, backfired on the Omatane Road, caught on fire, becomiug a total loss in a very short time. The driver was able to rescue a mail bag containing registered mail. The insurance is said to be £lOO. The following were elected officers of the Railway Tennis Club this season: — President. Mr. J. Mullins; committee, Messrs. Wilsher, At a conference of the works committee of the Borough Council and officials of the swimming club, it was decided to install a slate lined water chute, and also to whitewash the walls of the baths. The pool will open for the season on Tuesday. November 27. At a meeting of the Caledonian Association last evening the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand advised that the following Dominion championships had been allotted to the Taihape branch: March playing, men’s Highland fling, reel o' Tulloch . (girls under 18). Mr. Win. McKenzie. Dunedin, has been appointed to judge the dancing, subject to his acceptance. A street stall in nid of the local Plunket Society on Wednesday realised in the vicinity of £l5. Mrs. L. Haydon (president) and Mrs. A. W. Beale (secretary) were in charge. The winner of the dinner competition was Mrs. W. J. H. McCormick. ■
