FALL IN CIRCULATION EXPECTED

IN MANY ENGLISH NEWSPAPERS SUSPENSION OF FOOTBALL COMPETITIONS (United Service.) London, November 22. Sensational falls in the circulation figures of many leading newspapers are anticipated as the result of the enforced suspension of football competitions. The most popular form of competition was that requiring the reader correctly to forecast twenty-four results out of forty-four printed on a coupon. Despite the tremendous odds the first prize of £20,000 jointly offered by three newspapers has three times been won outright, and many smaller prizes amounting to £lO,OOO weekly have been distributed. The principal argument influencing the Court was that many individuals paid a penny for the coupon, not the newspaper, and that therefore it was gambling. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, November 22. As a result of a judgment delivered yesterday in the Divisional Court to the effect that football competitions conducted in three Sheffield newspapers who have been conducting similar competitions have decided to discontinue them after the conclusion of this week’s competition. The newspapers were illegal, the London newspapers concerned have been accustomed to offer large money prizes for correct forecasts, of results in the list of football matches, each forecast to be accompanied by a coupon cut from a copy of the newspaper concerned.
