AMERICAN ELECTIONS
— - <r A FATAL DUEL DEMOCRATIC SPLIT INDICATED (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. November 5, 8.30 p.m.) New York, November 4. A message from Jesup. Georgia, states that Judge R. Thomas, of the City Court, was shot dead by DeputySheriff Jladray, following a knife and pistol duel in the street after the Judge had called the sheriff an “Al Smith man.” Both men were Hoover supporters, and Jladray took- exception to Judge Thomas's aspersions on his loyalty as a lit manager for the-cam-paign on behalf of Mr. Hoover. Jladray was slashed, although his wounds are not serious. . The incident indicates how badly split the Democratic Party is in the Southern States, where hitherto Republican sentiment has never been known to exist.
