WORK ON NEW BRIDGE

A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. W. T. Strand) presiding. There was a full attendance of councillors. The Health Committee reported a decrease in the number of infectious diseases for the month of September. There had been four cases of scarlet fever, one of tuberculosis, and one of erysipelas. Nine notices to abate nuisances had been served. The borough engineer reported that during September 95 inspections of works in progress had been carried out and 24 house drainage systems had been tested. Thirty-two building permits had been issued, involving a total amount of ,£24,233. For the corresponding month 'last year 44 permits representing a total value of £33,158 were issued. Fees amounting to £249 4s. lOd. were collected. Traffic control, continued the report, had been carried out during September. and 23 cases concerning breaches of by-laws were heard in the Magistrate’s Court, convictions being obtained in each case. The Fire Brigade’s report for the period July 12 to September 13 stated that three calls had been received, one to a fire in the Hutt County Council, the second to a small fire in Bloomfield Terrace, and the third a false alarm received from a box in Victoria Street. All appliances, street alarms, and house bells were in good working order, and the attendance at all musters of the brigade had been good. New Hutt Bridge. The whole of the concrete work of the bridge proper, including parapets and kerbs, had now been completed, and when the footpath slabs were laid and the small concrete retaining wall at the school corner erected, only, filling and formation work would remain. billing was now being deposited on the western approach at the rate of about <5 yards a dav. During the month No. 1 span was concreted and the west abutment wing finished. The parapet was completed on spans 1. 2, 3 and 4, and the kerb and footpath slab supports constructed. Work was still progressing slowlv on the erection of the conveniences and the job was not yet completed. The tiling had been completed and the ceilings and floor inside had been finished in white atlas cement and red oxide cement respectively. The plumbers were now completing the flushes, etc.
