LORD LOVAT

ARRIVAL AT AUCKLAND TO SPEND FORTNIGHT IN DOMINION Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 8. Another ambassador of Empire, Lord Lovat, Parliamentary Undersecretary for Dominion Affairs, was most warmly welcomed to Auckland upon his arrival from Vancouver by the Niagara to discuss Imperial migra tion with the New Zealand Government. A grey-lialred man, with the build of a’cavalryman, an alert manner and ready smile, Lord Lovat is certain to make efen more friends in New Zealand than did his chief, Mr. Amery. He is emphatically what Americans term a “good mixer,” and his personality, added to his lineage, will make his advent a supreme event among New Zealand Scots. The visitor, who is accompanied by Mr. F. gkevington, M.8.E., an officer of the British Treasury, was greeted on board the ship by Sir Heaton Rhodes, representing the Government, Mr. H. D. Thomson, Under-Secretary for Immigration, Mr. D. Ardell, of the Department of Internal Affairs, and Colonel H. R. Potter, representing the New-Zealand Military Forces. As the Niagara was nearly an hour late he was taken quickly ashore in a Harbour Board launch and was hurried to the Town Hall for a civic reception. A luncheon arranged by the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association followed, and afterwards the visitor was taken by motor for a sight-seeing trip in the suburbs. Successful Canadian Visit. In a short interview Lord Lovat spoke with satisfaction of his visit to Canada and of his conferences with the Dominion and Provincial Governments. Regarding the application of the Empire Settlement Act he had found a real desire to co-operate with the Old Country in increasing British settlement. The results of his conversations were now being discussed by the authorities in Britain, and would be published in due course. After a fortnight in New Zealand Lord Lovat is, expected to spend six weeks in Australia and to leave on December 10, reaching London soon after the new year.
