LADIES’ HOCKEY TOURNEY
INTER-ISLAND MATCH WON BY NORTH By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, September 6. The annual inter-island match-in connection with the ladies’ championship hockey tournament was played to-day and resulted in a win for the North Island by 4 goals to 1. Apart from a cold easterly wind the conditions were good, there being no sun to trouble the players. Considering the fact that the southern players were practically unknown to each other their exhibition was a splendid one. A fast pace was maintained throughout, and both teams after the first quarter of an hour developed surprisingly good combination. With seven Ruahine players in their team, the northerners settled down more quickly than -their opponents, and it was due in large measure to this fact that ihc North secured such a good win. North were quick to seize their opportunities, and in the second half had slightly the better of the play. The South forwards had many chances, but failed to finish off the movements as well as their opponents. The halves and backs on both sides got through a lot of hard work and acquitted themselves well. Miss M. Mclntyre (Wellington) scored all goals for the North, Miss B. Milliehamp goaling for the South. The relay race for the Millie Cup was won by Wellington by four yards. Canterbury was second and Eastern third. BULLER DEFEATS WEST COAST.
