FRESH WATER FISH

NEED FOR SPECIALISED STUDY DEER PROBLEM UNDER CONTROL Reference was made by Mr. L. O. 11. Tripp, president, at the annual Acclimatisation Conference yesterday to the new fishing regulations drafted by the Marine Department. The amendments, he said, proposed by the conferenc and approved by the Department would be included iu the Bill to be brought down this session. They should aim at having in New Zealand a man, a scientist, who would devote the whole of his time to the study of fresh water fisheries. In Wellington a beginning had been made in a small way by giving a fellowship to Victoria College of £4OO a year for three years, and a scientific student had been appointed to make a study of the fish in New Zealand waters. He was working under a board with Professor Kirk and Mr. Heffer, and they were told he was doing very mod work. If the Government would move in the same direction it would be all to the good. Wherever a dam was put in a fish ladder should also be provided. One such ladder was to be placed in the Waitaki River costing £6OO. They had not. continued Mr. Tripp, been able to do much for the shooting men. A certain number of pheasants were being turned out, but the only birds which were really holding their own against their natural enemies were the ducks, and he thought the societies might do more in the way of breeding native ducks.

The deer question was well in hand, concluded Mr. Tripp, and the Internal Affairs Department desired the conference to discuss what should be done in certain districts.
