POLICE CASES Police cases in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday were heard before Mr. E. Page, B.M. For his second offence of drunkenness, Andrew McGonagle, a seaman, aged 41, was fined £l. ' James Flynn, a seaman, aged 45, was fined £1 for a second offence of drunkenness, and a similar amount for casting offensive matter in a public place, Jaek Dingle, a cook, aged 21, pleaded not guilty to stealing on overcoat and a pair of spectacles in a case, valued at £4 155., the property of lan Gordon Hart. Chief-Detective Ward said that on Saturday last Mr. Hart went into a city hotel for lunch. He hung his coat up, and when -he came out from the dining-room, found that it was gone. The coat was later found in the possession of accused. Three witnesses said that accused was sober. Mr. W. E. Leicester submitted that Dingle took the coat by mistake, and said that accused was under the influence of liquor when he picked up the coat. Witnesses for the defence alleged that accused was drunk. The Magistrate said there was an element of doubt as to whether accused intended to steal the coat, he, therefore, dismissed the information. LOWER HUTT SITTING. Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., presided at the Lowc.r Hutt Magistrate’s Court yesterday. William Mark Malloy, for breach of his prohibition order, was convicted and fined £2, with 10s. costs. Roy L. Pilcher was convicted on charges of failing to report an accident and of driving in a dangerous manner. On the first count he was fined £1 and on the second £3. Nepia, who was £4 10s. in arrears with his maintenance order, was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, to be released on payment of arrears and costs. Bramwell, sen., £l5 12s. 9d.; Hutt Cabinet Co., Ltd., v. J. Barker, £8 16s. 2d.; Kenner’s Ltd. v. J. B. A. Smith, £l2; Hutt Meat Co., Ltd., v. W. Saussey, costs only, £1 Bs.; Borough of Lower Hutt v. S. L. Gilmer, £l2 19s. Id.

The following judgment summonses were issued: J. Hourigan to pay T. J. Lewis £l6 15s. 6d. at the rate of ss. a fortnight, in default 16 days’ imprisonment ;J. O'Leary to pay'T. E. and E. Steel £39 9s. forthwith, in default 39 days’ imprisonment; W. Chatfield to pay V. V. Dyke £3l 16s. 6d. forthwith, in default 31 days’ imprisonment; G. Johnston to pay the Ilutt Meat Co., Ltd., £3 17s, lOd. forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment; G. Stannard to pay C. Diamond £5 9s. at the rate of 10s. a week, in default five days’ imprisonment; L. W. Probort to pay Clendon Bros. £3 15s. 9d. forthwith, in default four days’ imprisonment; J. Brady to pay J. Berry £l4 3s. at the rate of 10s. a week, in default 14 days’ imprisonment; D. Merrell to pay E. J. Evans £6 10s. at tho rate of ss. fortnightly, in default six days’ imprisonment.
