Shannon, July 14. At a meeting of the borough council, Councillor Gunning was granted a further three months’ leave.of absence/-ow-ing to illness. Correspondence was received from the district railway engineer, that he could not accede to the council's request to supply the pipes necessary for the proposed extension of the road embankment and culvert on the railway property near the Grey Street crossing. Permission, however, was 'granted the council to extend the work ou the railway land. This will be done as soon as the Public Works Department subsidy for relief of unemployment is received. Work was commenced on the Koputaroa Stream, in the Buckley Drainage Board’s area, on Wednesday; when ten of the local unemployed started. It is hoped to make the number up to 30 this week.

The local Druids held a successful dance at the Parish Hall on Tuesday night. Mrs Roach gave a pleasant euchre tournament at her residence, on Thursday afternoon, in aid of the Croquet Club funds. There Was :i large gathering. Mesdames Braun and Snelling tied for the first prize, which Mrs Snelling won on the cut. The consolation prize vent to Mrs Better. Victoria, second daughter of the Rev. and Mrs A. Stewart, of Bulls, was married to Mr. James Alexander, at Palmerston North, on Wednesday afternoon. The father of the bride, assisted by Rev. Nicholas (Foxton), performed the ceremony, and th p Rev. A. J. Marnell (Shannon I gave the bride away. Mr. G. The local school basketball A and B teams journeyed to Foxtou on Thursalny afternoon, and were defeated by the Foxton girls, who entertained their visitors Io afternoon lea before they left for borne.
