LABOUR SPLIT
IN SOUTH AFRICA EFFORTS TO BRIDGE GULF. FAIL Cape Town, May 11. All efforts to bridge the gulf dividing the Labour Party have been abandoned. The two factions have called conferences, the National Council supporting the majority of the branches in boldly proclaiming that the Hon. F. H. I’. Creswell, Minister of Defence, must go. It describes his summoning of a conference as the last desperate throw of his ambitions. Mr. Creswell adheres to the position that the council has been irregularly elected by "dud” branches, and the forthcoming conference is asked to condemn such malpractices which have occurred during the last three years, and asks it to elect an emergency administration in an effort to save the party. Meanwhile the Nationalists are mostly concerned about the fate of the pact in view of the imminence of the General Elections, and demand an assurance that onty one Labour candidate will, be nominated for tho allotted constituencies.
NEW PARTY IMMINENT IN NEW SOUTH WALES Sydney, May 12.
The formation of a new Labour Party in New South Wales is believed to be imminent, consisting of the former politicians who were expelled by the Labour Party. It is likely to do official Labour considerable damage at the forthcoming Federal elections. Mr. J. Graves, president of the Australian Labour Party, officially warns the workers to beware of the new organisation, and declares that it will be led by “a crew of disgruntled Labour politicians and ex-Labour officials.”
