UNION’S FIRST MOVE TOWARDS
SETTLEMENT
EXTENSION OF TIME REFUSED
(Rec. May 13, 5.5 p.m.)
Melbourne, May 13.
For the first time since the marina cooks’ trouble began, has a move towards a settlement been attempted, when the union representative, Mr. Tudehope, to-day telegraphed to the shipowners asking them to extend till Wednesday the time given in which the cooks can man the ships. The owners refused the request. InterState importers and others point out tliat the men have been given great latitude. The patience of business men is exhausted, and some consider the shipowners have not been firm enough.
