Masterton, May 11.

A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held to-day before Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M. On a charge of failing to provide maintenance for his wife, Charles Hayward was remanded to appear at Christchurch on Tuesday.

Owing to illness, Mary Boyd failed to appear on a charge of stealing timber to the value of 45., the property of Edgar Holmwood. Mr. R. R. Burridge, who appeared for accused, entered a plea of guilty. He said accused was 74 years of age and was a washer-woman. The theft was a t 'fiing one. i Sergeant Dyer said accused was well-known as a reputed thief, although she had not been previously convicted. In inflicting a fine of £l, the Bench said that had accused been a younger woman she would have been imprisoned. W. Brenhill was fined 10s., with costs 10s., on a charge of riding a bicycle without a light. A fine of 10s., with costs 10s., was imposed on George M. S. Kelly for leaving his motor-car in the street without lights. Samuel Allen and John L. Fulton were each ordered to pay £l, with costs 10s., for using a motor without a number. Henry J. W. Lord was mulcted in the sum of £l, with costs 10s„ for failing to notify the change of ownership of a motor-car.

Charges of driving a motor-car without a license and of stopping it on the wrong side of the street were preferred against George Watson. On the first count he was ordered to pay £l, and on the second 10s., with total costs £l.

James Tweddell and J. R. Donovan were each fined 10s. and costs for leaving a motor-car on the wrong side of the street.

Walter Primm, charged with failing to keep a motor-car on the correct side of the road, was fined 10s. and costs £1 Os. 6d.

On a charge of permitting a motorlorry to be used without a heavy traffic license, Black and White Cabs, Limited, were fined £5 and costs. Rough and Company, Limited, were similarly treated. A fine of £l, with costs £1 os. Cd., was imposed on J. Shaw for driving a motor-car without a license. Ernest Edward Scott pleaded guilty to a charge of using obscene language in the main street of Tinui. Sergeant Dyer said that accused had taken drink and become abusive. He had been previously convicted. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £5, in default one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.
