LICENSING ACT

0 BREACHES IN WAIRARAPA Masterton, May 11. Charges under the Licensing Act were heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day before Mr. S. L. P. Free, S.M. W. G. Rundle, licensee of the Club Hotel, Pahiatua, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide the Clerk of Court at Masterton with a notice with respect to liquor supplied for the no-license area of Masterton. Sergeant Dyer said that on the notices forwarded defendant had designated only “Masteron,” instead of giving the full address of the purchaser. This was not sufficient under the Licensing Act. The police were not pressing for a heavy penalty. Defendant was ordered to pay costs only 10s. Ten similar charges were preferred against B. W. Bunbury, licensee of the Taueru Hotel, who pleaded guilty. Counsel for defendant said that this was the first hotel defendant had conducted on the fringe of a no-license district. He had entered the transactions in a book, but had not forwarded notices, as he had been unaware of the requirements of the Act. On the first charge defendant was fined £5 and costs, while on the remaining counts he was convicted and discharged.
