CITY COUNCIL OFFICERS

APPOINTMENTS TO BE MADE

ASSISTANT ENGINEER DUE AT END OF MONTH

As soon as the members of the City Council return from their holidays the committees will reassemble for the transaction of business.

One of the most important matters to be dealt with is the appointment of a waterworks engineer, a vacancy created by the retirement of Mr.' J. M. Morice. This position carries with it a great deal of responsibility, as the new engineer wll have to face the task of reviewing the various sources of water supply mentioned in recent reports, and recommend to the council which particular work should be first undertaken. It seems that if Wellington and the Hutt Valley continue to grow at the present rate all the sources mentioned—the new storage dam at Wainui, and th? new source of supply at the Pakuratahi and Little Akatarawa —will eventually be harnessed for the use of the'public; in the meantime the economic point will which work will be most advantageous for the city to proceed with in its own interest, or, as an alternative, which scheme would best benefit the city and valley alike. These are important matters for the new waterworks engineer to report upon, as . he will probably have to do, this year. There are also the appointments of a city librarian and costing accountant to be made.

The council has already had one long and lively discussion over the latter appointment, and the duties "involved, and came to no finality; but, in the minds of some councillor, at all events, this new officer will earn his salary over and over again. The new assistant city engineer (Mr. Thompson) is due here at the end of the month. One of his principal duties will be to attend to the paving operations) in the city, which are to be rather extensive for the first half of the year. There are also many hundreds of footpaths in a disgraceful condition, which have to be put in order; this work will be financed out of the loan of last year.
