A CHEESE-MAKING WASTE
DAIRY COMPANIES PROTEST
Palmerston North, October 13.
That section of the Dairy Act which forbids, dairy factories to utilise waste matter from cheese presses came in for some criticism at a meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ Association to-day. Letters were received from several companies which considered that there was no reason for the regulation if the fat and other products were collected in a sanitary manner. One small company stated that the utilising of the fat had meant about £5O per annum to them. Mr. H. E. Pacey expressed the opinion that the regulation was really superfluous, but stressed the fact that some measure was necessary to regulate the methods of collecting the waste matter.
Mr. T. Ranford pointed out that £5O was a large sum of money to a small factory, while large factories would save far more by utilising the fat and other matter. He thought that it was a pity that this could not be used. It was eventually decided, on the motion of Mr. Pacey, to recommend that the regulation referred to should be deleted from the ' Act, and one substituted. calling for satisfactory methods in collecting the .waste matter. Copies of the resolution are to be sent to the body .raising the question—the Taranaki Dairv Federation-*—and to the Director of the Dairv Division of the Department of Agriculture (Mr. W. Singleton).
