CROQUET

SEASON OPENED IN. LEVIN. Levin, October 12. Despite rather unpleasant weather conditions, there was a good attendance both of members and of visitors* at the opening ceremony of the Levin Croquet Club this week, visitors having come from Palmerston North, Manakau, and Ohau. The season was opened by the Mayor (Mr. T. HObson), who remarked that last year. the Levin Club came well to the front by holding the Bennett Buttons for seventeen games._ He also remarked upon the success of a member of tlie club, Airs. Kirk, in the handicap singles in the Manawatu tournament, in which she was runner-up. It was hoped that this season some enjoyable games would again be held • in Palmerston North The Dominion tournament would be held there this year, when four of England’s leading players would take part in the contest, to which an added interest would in consequence be given. Mr. Hobson also commented on the fact that Mrs. Nicholson had presented a pair of gold mallets, to be competed lor by players within a radius of fifteen miles from Levin, the trophies to be competed for in handicap doubles. In order to give every encouragement to beginners, the subscriptions had been reduced to half for first-year players, and it was hoped that this would prove a great incentive to those who had not yet played croquet to make use of their present opportunity to do so. Mrs Hobson then rolled the first ball, members then proceeding with the contests which had been arranged. Following are the results of the matches: —Peg, Mrs. Bryant (Manakau) ; angles, Mrs. Gambrill (Palmerston North) ; golf, Airs. Synott (Otaki) ; rings, Airs. Ryder (Levin) ; ladder, Mrs. Cotter (Manakau).
