GIRL GUIDES

MOVEMENT IN MANAWATU. Palmerston North, October 12. Reference to the progress made by the Girl Guide movement in Palmerston aud district was made in the annual report of the Commissioner for the district (Miss C. E. Warburton), which was presented at the annual meeting of the Palmerston branch of the association to-day. Since last year the number of Guides and Brownies in the district had increased from E 6 to 230, while Guiders now numbered 15, as against fivo last year. These figures included Feilding, a Guides branch having been formed in that district in September last. J’here were now 82 members in the local association, this showing an increase of fifty during the year, while there were four Guide companies and one Brownie pack. The Commissioner stated that she had visited all companies in the district and had .found the Guides very interested in their work. The pack of Brownies was progressing very well under Miss McHardie. Both in Bulls and in Feilding excellent progress was being made. An effort wag being made, to form a company of Brownies at Kiwitea, but the children were so scattered in that part of the country that little progress had so far been made. It was h/iped, however, that better results would be obtained when more favourable weather was experienced. Since April Guiders’ meetings liad been held each month in Palmerston North and Feilding alternatively. Usual Guide work had been carried out, and on three occasions there had been special speakers on subjects of interest to Guiders. ' Miss Warburton pointed out that the finances of the association were quite sound, the executive having taken care to cut its coat according to its cloth. It was hoped to hold a garden fete on November 19 in order to raise money for companies and for association funds. It would also be necessary for the association to increase its contributions to the provincial'headquarters as soon as it could afford to do so.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted and the following officers elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs. D. H. Bett; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. J. Graham and F. J. Nathan, and Miss McLagen; executive, Mesdames Barnett, Bennett. Day, Haggitt, Keeble, Mackie, McClure, Newman, Rodgers, Sim, Thompson and Wimsett. The Guiders’ training camp for 1927 will be held in Palmerston North from November 26 to December 5,
