TANGIER’S FUTURE

DISCUSSED BY CHAMBERLAIN AND DE RIVERA

AGREEMENT OF FRANCE & SPAIN DESIRED

Rugby, October 9.

Sir Austen Chamberlain, who readied Paris on Friday, and had an hour’s conversation with M. Briand, in a Press interview, expressed pleasure in making the acquaintance during his holiday of General Primo de Rivera. At the meet ing with the Spanish statesman they had talked about Geneva and also Tangier. Tangier was the subject of conversations which were still in progress between the French and Spanish Governments, and he was waiting for them to be finished. He was convinced that if France and Spain could come to an agreement it would be acceptable to the British Government. He had expressed to General Primo de Rivera his regret that Spain had left the League and had drawn his attention to the influential position which her delegate bad held in the Council. He very much hoped that the Spanish Government would before long find it possible to reverse its decision of last year.

Referring in an interview to the previous evening’s conversation with M Briand, the British Foreign Secretary said: “As usual we found ourselves in confident agreement on all pending questions.” After luncheon with M. Briand, Sir Austen left Paris for London.—British Official Wireless. By Telegraph.—press association. Coptbight. London, October 8. General De Rivera, in an interview with the Madrid correspondent of the “Sunday Times,” hinted that some very satisfactory arrangement over Tangier might be made with Britain as media tor. North Africa had always been a trouble and expense to Spain.
