WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING

HANDICAPS DECLARED

JOCKEY’S PREMONITION HOW IT WAS FULFILLED. Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 10. _ A jockey’s strange premonition of accident was fulfilled in a remarkable manner in the running of the Onehunga Steeplechase, at the races at Ellerslie today. There were only two starters. Glenotus, ridden by E. C. Bae, and Vendavies, ridden by IL Syme. A third horse (Taitaiata) was saddled upfor the race, but the stewards ordered his withdrawal on account, of lameness, and the totalisator investments on tho horse were returned. ' Tho mishap occurred at the water jump, the second obstacle in the race, right in front of the. grandstand. Pendavies. who wag leading, negotiated the jump safely. Glenotus did not; he baulked, then crashed through the fence, and his rider, with a resounding splash, landed in the ditch of water Nor did this end the jockey’s' misfortune. When he was thrown he clung on to the bridle, and pulled it off. While tho largo crowd in the grandstand was roaring itself hoarse with laughter, the incident from the viewpoint of the rider was anything with humorous. Ho was unhurt, but. the fact that ho has a wooden leg. having lost one leg in n railway accident years ago, was an added handicap to him in his predicament. However mounted constable and two men who were standing at the jump went to his rescue, and the bridle was readjusted and the jockey assisted to remount. Then Glenotus set out again, but by this time Pendavies was half, a mile ahead. The race was then a procession, and .with no further falls, Pendavies won by two furlongs from Glenotus. The interesting point is that Rae had a premonition that his horse might throw him at the water jump. Glenotus bad baulked at tho jump in training, and the jockey was determined to take no chances of losing the second prize of J.'IOO. even if he could not win. He therefore arranged for another rider wearing a. lead jacket correctly- adjusted to the horse’s weight to bo ready at the obstacle in case he was hurt. However, he was not, and he was therefore able to continue in tho race himself. When Glenotus passed the post there was quite an ovation for the jockey.
