THE RACING WORLD

(Continued from Pago 11.) .North Island three-year-old form so far as it has gone should bo encouraging to' the southern owners ot prospective Derby candidates. Unless Laughing Prlnqe rehabilitates himself and Gascony comes up to expectations, there is nothing out of the ordinary iu the north to date. Riccarton stables will bo strongly represented in the Dunedin Guineas this week. Among those engaged are Eulalie, Alartarma, Satrap, Starflight, and Don Jose, who suffice to make up a good field for the classic race. They will also provide a great contest without taking the southern competitors into account, as the four first named have all been galloping well in their work. It will occasion no surprise if the southerns turn out the Derby winner this fear. Agrion also has still to race as a three-year-old. ■ Count Cavour is bowling, along in lino style in his work. He lias not .been stretched out in any record-beating gallops yet, hut he is in great order and he should be capable of a brilliant effort when T. H. Gillett elects to send him against the watch in real earnest. With a race at the Dunedin meeting this week and another in the Rangiora Cup on Labour Day, he will be at his best tor the New Zealand Cup. Count Cavour, being by Solfcrino from a Bonifornr mare, may not yet have reached the wealth of his powers. The Autumnus filly Child’s Play shows plenty of speed in her track work (says the Christchurch “Star"), and she shapes like being more than useful this season. She is likely to perform well in the McLean Stakes, after which she may be tried out further against the North Island two-year-olds in the Wellesley Stakes. A comparison of the nominations received by the Canterbury Jockey Club for its principal events at the Cup meeting this year and last year is as follows: —
