AMERICANS HONOUR MAORIS
BRONZE TABLET PRESENTED ' z Dominion Special. Rotorua, October 14. Officers of the American fleet of battleships who visited Rotorua in August last year were so charmed with the welcome and hospitality of the Maoris that on their return to the United States they thought out a gift to send the people of the Whakarewarewa and Ohinemutu villages. That gift, which takes the form of a beautiful bronze tablet, was presented by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. R. F. Bollard) to the chiefs of the two villages this evening. There was a large'gathering of Natives, and the ceremony of receiving the tablets occasioned much interest among the visitors to the district, the Wahiao meeting house at Whakarewarewa, where it took place, being crowded. Mita Taupopoki and Te Aniohau received the tablets on behalf of the different villages, and the speakers who supported them were Tarn Rihari Aprima Wiara, and Wire Kingi Te Maera Te Warihi. The ceremony, which contained many of the old customs of the Maori, lasted well into the evening.
