STOCKS OF WOOL

Tho Statistical Office has made an attempt to obtain statistics relating to stocks of wool in New Zealand, and the figures obtained are said to be the outcome of a system which it is hoped will eventually cover all holders of wool' iu the Dominion. For its first effort information has been obtained from woollen mills, freezing works, wool-scouring and fcllniongcry works, and from brokers and dealers throughout tho country, but it has not yet been .found possible to collect from farmers. In addition, no account has been taken this year of wool held by shipping companies or in tho various Harbour Board stores. Next year the field will be extended to cover the whole of the wool stock held in the Dominion. The total quantity of wool returned at June 30, 1926, by tho four classes of holders mentioned above, whs 17,202,9001 b., classified as follow :— Lb. Merino 985.174 Halfbred 3,108,791 Corriedale 75.377 Crossbred 13,033,258 17,202,900 Of the above 7,704.7301 b. was greasy wool, 1,560,2271 b. was scoured and washed, 5,428,9661 b. sliped, 2,320,1661 b. crutchings, and 188,8111 b. wool on skins.
